How to Prepare Your Mountain Bike for Autumn
Having completely exhausted you bike through the summer months by your long and untroubled rides; it is the onset of Autumn that one has to consider the fact of maintenance of your bike. It is time to evaluate the condition of your bike. Summer often sees most cyclists use their bikes many folds more than the grueling winter months. However, with the onset of cooler temperature when the usage is reduced and it is now the perfect time when one should look into the maintenance and upkeep of the bike.
The most important and primary work is to give your bike a complete cleaning. Every section of the bike needs to be cleaned carefully. It is always advisable to remove any stains of dirt and stain. You should dismantle your bike completely to clean it properly. This will not only improve and maintain the look of your bike but will also enhance its performance in the long run. However, if you are not adept in dismantling the bike it is advisable to clean each part meticulously and then follow instruction manual before taking your bike apart. The majority of the bikes parts can be cleaned with soap water along with a toothbrush. This enables you to reach every nook and corner of your bike which would otherwise be very difficult to clean. Some professional bikes such as Specialized bikes or Cannondale bikes do however come along with specific user recommendation from the producers.
The drive system is among the most important section of the bike which requires special attention while cleaning. Like any other part, this too can be dealt with soap water and a toothbrush. While cleaning this section one has to rotate the pedals to ensure that you reach both the derailleur and the chain ring. On completion of the process of washing this section needs to be monitored and lubricated to guarantee that it is kept in prime condition. A very common problem that you might encounter in the drive system is that more often than not the bearing is worn out and thus requires a quick replacement. This can be achieved by replacing the bottom bracket.
Another vital section that requires a proper checking is the brake system. This being the most essential safety device in your bike requires special attention. One has to meticulously ensure that this system has not developed any permanent damage or undergone excessive wear and tear. All the cables attached to the brakes needs proper scrutiny as a minor lapse in this system may prove fatal during the wet and greasy autumn roads. If your bike is fitted with Disc brakes then it is of paramount importance to inspect the disc caliper and verify the functionality of both the brake pads as to check that both of them move equally to grasp the rotor.
With the onset of autumn, it is but imperative that the daylight hours will reduce. Thus it is vitally important to check the proper functioning of the lights in your bike. The lights are a must use during night and even during fading lights. This will assist other motorist to take notice of your bike and stay away from accidentally harming you. Thus before you set out with your bike you should most certainly ensure that the batteries are in proper working condition or replacing them and also to ensure that both the front and rear lights are working optimally.
